FREE Compusec 5 is a powerful, yet free, security solution for desktops, notebooks and tablet PCs. It comes with a lot of features, such as pre-boot authentication, hard-disk encryption, encryption of files and folders, encryption of removable media and others.

One of the compulsory components it will install is the pre-boot authentication. This will prompt for a user ID and a password, before the operating system can be booted. If the hard-disk is encrypted, the encryption key will be available only after the user is successfully authenticated.

FREE Compusec allows for full hard disc encryption including swap files, temporary files, operating system and even free space. The initial encryption can be performed either at pre-boot (which is slower but more secure), or in the background, after the operating system boots (which is faster). After the initial encryption, the encryption and decryption are done on-the-fly. There's also support for sector-based encryption using 256-bit AES (Advanced Encryption System).

Other encryption tools include Removable Media Encryption (for encrypting diskettes, memory sticks or USB thumb drives), SafeLan (for encrypting files and folders on a server) and DataCrypt (for encrypting individual files using Public Key Cryptography). There's also a feature called DriveCrypt that will allow to create an encrypted file for secure file storage. This file can be mounted as a drive.

Other features worth mentioning include Identity Management (encrypting and storing usernames and passwords for software and web applications) or ClosedTalk (software phone application for encrypted VoIP through the Internet).

In this new version, several features are introduced, and others or updated. These include status reporting, 256-bit AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) encryption for standalone installations, improved audit logging, improved DataCrypt, new DriveCrypt application, support for Windows Vista and a few others.
